We have reached the final episode of Series two! This week we are bringing you a very special episode focusing on men’s mental health and lifestyle psychiatry. We are joined by two very knowledgeable guests, working in this field:
Dr Joe Firth is a Presidential Research Follow at the University of Manchester, where he completed his pHD focusing on the benefits of physical exercise as a treatment adjunct for young people with psychosis. He is passionate about developing pragmatic and impactful programmes designed to help young people with mental health problems to adopt healthy lifestyles and benefit from the positive effects of exercise on our mental and physical health.
Dr Gregory Scott Brown is a psychiatrist and wellness advocate based over the other side of the pond in Texas! He is a leading voice in supporting evidence based holistic mental health treatments and prevention. He is also the founder and director of the Centre for Green Psychiatry as well as an affiliate faculty member at the University of Texas Dell medical school. Dr. Brown supports an integrated approach to health using a combination of conventional pharmacotherapy with non-pharmaceutical therapies such as meditation and physical exercise.
In this episode we discuss the topic of men’s mental health and why there is often silence around this subject. We also delve deeper into the evidence base for lifestyle interventions, such as diet and exercise for mental health as well as how these interventions might be delivered in a psychiatric setting. In particular, we discuss the difficulty in balancing the metabolic side effects of some medications commonly used in the mental health setting and controlling psychiatric symptoms. Tune in to hear some fascinating case studies and research findings, as well as how you can implement some of the concepts such as green psychiatry and movement into your own life, for better physical and mental wellbeing.

She is currently leading a Culinary Medicine programme at Harvard University, teaching first year medical students how to cook nutritious food at university.
Tune in to hear more about Dr Naidoo’s most recent publication – ‘This is your brain on food’ (US title)/ ‘The Food Mood Connection’ (UK title). This week, we bring you the second instalment of our Food and Mood series, zooming in on how the relationship between food and mood is utilised within clinical practice in the UK. This week we have two esteemed psychiatrists: Dr Pratima Singh, community and adult psychiatrist who strongly advocates for a holistic approach and intensive lifestyle interventions to address the burden of mental health morbidity and Dr Kirsty Alderton, practising psychiatrist with a wide range of experience including perinatal mental health, eating disorders and liason psychiatry. Kirsty also promotes the importance of mind-body medicine and is keen to implement a more integrated approach into mainstream mental health services
We discuss how Kirsty and Pratima became interested in nutrition and lifestyle interventions in psychiatry and how this can be implemented through adaptation of the environment. For example, we discuss how a psychiatric inpatient ward could be altered to promote a more healing environment by having gym equipment or running food demonstration workshops. Pratima tells us about a food demonstration workshop at an intensive care psychiatric ward she worked on, teaching patients how to make an omelette or a smoothie and then sitting down to eat it altogether. How cool is that?!
We also discuss how to approach conversations with patients regarding nutrition and lifestyle, and the importance of taking sociocultural factors into consideration, when making recommendations.
These two wonderful guests shed light on how they implement nutrition and lifestyle interventions into their clinical practice and what the future may hold, regarding the field of nutritional psychiatry research. We hope that you learn and enjoy!

We are delighted to bring you the first episode of our three-part series focusing on the connection between food and mood. This week we are joined by Dr Sabrina Mörkl, Psychiatrist specialising in Eating Disorders and approaches to Nutritional Psychiatry based in Austria and Megan Lee, Bachelor in Psychological science and current pHD student at Southern Cross University (Australia), studying dietary patterns and depression.
We discuss a wide range of topics relating to the connection between the food that we eat and our mental health. Our guests discuss perceptions towards mental health in their respective countries, as well as the research being conducted into Nutritional Psychiatry.
We further explore why diet has been overlooked in modern healthcare and what exactly the Mediterranean diet is, focusing in on pivotal studies such as the SMILES trial and HELFIMED trial, that explore the connection between principles of the Mediterranean diet and mental health.
We also delve into recent research conducted into gut microbiome dysregulation and mental health. In particular, recent research has shown dysregulation in patients with Anorexia Nervosa, perhaps reframing the condition as a metabo-psychiatric disorder, rather than a psychiatric disorder alone?
Please do listen to this episode to hear all the above and more from experts in the field, and what the future of research into nutritional psychiatry might look like. We hope that you learn and enjoy!

On this weeks episode, Ally chats to three wonderful doctors: Dr Nitu Bakejal, Dr Tosin Sotubo and Dr Shireen Kassam.
They discuss how COVID-19 has highlighted many of the deep rooted inequalities in our society and health system, and discuss in detail how and why the BAME community has been disproportionately affected.
Ally and her guests also delve into topics such as the effect of discrimination on your mental wellbeing, representation in the NHS from chief executives to frontline staff, representation in lifestyle medicine and the wellness sphere and experiences of racism and sexism in the workplace.
They also discuss the importance of calling out racism in the workplace and committing to a society in which discrimination is not tolerated.
